It’s Tess Baxter’s senior year, and she has every intention of getting the lead role in the school play, Romeo and Juliet—and snagging Trevor Bello, the leading man. But when her dream role goes to her arch-rival and she is cast as the frumpy nurse instead, Tess must swallow her pride, do battle against an evil genius, and even become a little bit devious herself to win the heart of her Romeo.

Tess finds herself in a fat suit and a scuzzy gray wig while hated head cheerleader Jude Mauvais gets to wear the gorgeous dress, recite the gorgeous monologue, and kiss the more-than-gorgeous Trevor. Meanwhile, Tess's best friend, Olivia, is going off the deep end, and her guy friend, Charlie, won’t reveal the identity of his mystery crush. Instead of enjoying the perfect senior year she’s planned, Tess finds herself
--enduring humiliating rehearsals;
--almost-but-not-quite stalking Trevor;
--visiting a voodoo priestess in Baton Rouge;
--becoming the victim of a way-uncool prank involving her butt, a camera phone, and a mass text message;
--and twice (!) kissing boys before she knows whether they will kiss her back.

But by swallowing her pride (and embracing the fat suit), Tess becomes the ingenue of her real life ... and finds the real-life Romeo of her dreams.

The authors are sisters who both live in Austin, Texas. This is their first novel.

This is a very fun and well-paced novel--a quick, light read that still manages to be satisfying. While "Give Me My Romeo" hews pretty close to tried-and-true YA tropes (from the highschool drama production at the center of the novel to the "mean girl"-like nemesis), the authors' keen, relevant wit keeps the storytelling fresh and engaging. Peppered with references to both literature and teen culture, the novel manages to be sophisticated and self-aware while still allowing readers to indulge in a certain amount of Sex-and-the-City-style window shopping and brand ogling.

Authors (and sisters) Erin Werley and Amber Werley Orand know their readers crave a bit of "Cosmo" and "Lucky" mixed in with the Shakespeare, and they're happy to oblige. Preparing for her big audition, our heroine Tess Baxter "decided to put just a little extra effort into looking my best. In addition to my usual moisturizer, powder, and mascara, I put on a trace of blush, some raisin-colored eye shadow, and a dramatic, berry-colored lip stain. Then I decided there was a fine line between drama and Kardashian--it was 7:30 a.m., after all--and wiped off most of the eye shadow."

Best of all, Tess is appealing and relatable as a heroine, and very, very funny as a narrator. Her endearing quirks and above-average intelligence (softened by self-deprecating humor) are nothing new in YA entertainment, but Werley and Orand have given her spot-on wit. After awkwardly handling a compliment from her crush ("Well, thanks. You're no slouch yourself.") Tess wonders "Why do I always talk like a member of AARP when I'm around cute boys?"

As an added bonus, readers living in (or familiar with) Dallas, Texas, will enjoy recognizing familiar details of the city and its more elite subcultures. Our heroine plans to attend Baylor after she graduates from high school, and the doorbell of her crush's family home chimes "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." What's not to love?

Give Me My Romeo eBook Erin Werley Amber Werley Orand Reviews

I have not picked up a book to read in a while and was delighted to start again with this one. Good characters and you get attatched to them quickly. Hope there are more to come!
Well written book geared toward the high school age reader. I wish there were books like this when I was this age. It was a wonderful change to read a book that had no profanity and was well written. Great job ladies! Give Me My Romeo
I just finished reading Give Me My Romeo and loved it! The storyline is captivating from the start and the entire book is very well written! I'll be suggesting this book to all my friends!
This book was a lot of fun! Though not a native Texan, I've lived there for some time, and I really enjoyed the tiny bits of local color thrown in. And at the same time, the characters and the central story have a universal appeal! I would really enjoy finding out more about Tess and Co. in future books.
This made me wish I was back in high school! I miss working really hard towards a school play or performance, and the joy/terror of crushes, or finding out someone likes you. Tess is one of those characters that you want to befriend in real life. She's smart, and funny, and with a great head on her shoulders.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. As a school librarian I am thrilled to find a book I can add to our library with no qualms! It's funny,with a sweet story line, that all the students (and teachers) will enjoy reading. Hopefully there will be a sequel. Superbly written!
This is a great story about the ups and downs of early adulthood as seen through the eyes of a teenager in private school. The characters are relatable and current. The authors did a great job of capturing that awkward and exhilarating time of life when you're on the cusp of being an actual grownup. I particularly enjoyed the first-person perspective, as it reminded me of my own time spent in private school. I found the main character's internal musings to be quite humorous as she begins to understand that there will be times in life when you need to listen to the internal voice, as well as silence it. All-around this is a fun read and an excellent book for young adults. I look forward to reading more from these authors in the future.
