A good way to get a feel for Hayek's politics, philosophies, and ideas without too much long, detailed reading. This is not a subject I want to spend a lot of time with, so the conciseness is appreciated.A word about his politics. He says he is a Liberal and he dislikes Conservatives. But he is closest to being a Libertarian, and far removed from modern American Progressives. Some examples. He despises the changing of the meaning of words for political ends; he perfectly describes political correctness. He sees social justice as a great evil, and repeats this several times because it is not compatible with free men. He is somewhat ambiguous on the role of government, both distrusting its wisdom (he shares Adam Smith's concept of spontaneous, uncontrolled change) but somehow envisions a one world government to end war. Like Adams, he believes of the importance of culture & values to cause wealth and population growth, both good things. He repeatedly puts down states (government) and praises private companies. He says that a millionaire is less dangerous to society than a low level government worker wielding the power of the state. He opposes distributive justice - no one can say how much any person deserves to be paid. He favors equal opportunity but not equal outcomes. He does not have faith in science, social science, and economics to improve society (although he can't quite say he is a populist). Inflation is one of the biggest problems caused by government, it destroys freedom and grows the size of government and throws cold water on the more desirable spontaneous changes that create civilization. In government, the scum rises to the top. Like Adam Smith, he reviles all forms of exclusive, privileged, monopolistic and coercive elements of the government - private relationship.
Not at all what I expected.

Memorable Quotations from Friedrich August Hayek eBook Jim Dell Reviews
DR. Hayek has deep insight and true wisdom. He blends the truths of economics with his understanding of the social condition.
He has a profound grasp of the essential nature of liberty. He gives us an abiding faith in the rightness of liberal views in the light of our Constitution. A man can be profoundly liberal and deeply conservative of our heritage. Such a man is Hayek.
