In this Pulitzer Prize finalist by award winning playwright Gina Gionfriddo, Suzanna sets up Max, her best friend, on a blind date with her husband's co-worker, the mysterious Becky Shaw. What follows is a series of cataclysmic events that forever changes all their lives. Mixing sharp wit and humor with the taut suspense of a psychological thriller, the critically acclaimed Becky Shaw is a comedy of romantic errors that will keep audiences guessing.
An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Emily Bergl as Suzanna Slater; Matt Letscher as Andrew Porter; Marsha Mason as Susan Slater; Mandy Siegfried as Becky Shaw; Josh Stamberg as Max Garrett.
Directed by Bart DeLorenzo. Recorded before a live audience at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, in February, 2011.

3.5 starsThe dialogue is crisp, witty, and real. The characters are all flawed and somewhat hard to like, which makes for a tough watch (or read). That said, I appreciate and enjoy Max's brain and brutal honesty (but that is also because he reminds me of my most difficult friend). In the author's note, Ms. Gionfriddo stated that she had sat through several audience talk backs and that "the one constant I find is the zeal to ascribe blame." She wrote that people have attacked all five characters, though Andrew and Becky take the most savage beatings (they are the characters I dislike the most too).
The plot doesn't move much, though I was in a state of disbelief at how it ends for two of the characters. The plot is the flaw here. All this written, the play is entertaining and can lead to much discussion, which therefore, makes it effective.

Becky Shaw (Audible Audio Edition) Gina Gionfriddo Emily Bergl Matt Letscher Marsha Mason Mandy Siegfried Josh Stamberg LA Theatre Works Books Reviews
Good read! Simple production.
I have never been into plays whether it is reading or seeing. Becky Shaw, on the other hand, definitely sparks an interest to start. It is funny, bold, unethical, and just fantastic. Certainly my kind of humor.
Gionfriddo's voice is a contemporary, comedic breath of fresh air! This play will keep you laughing from start to finish. Whether you're an actor, director, producer, or playwright, there's no need for further consideration, pull the trigger on this one, it's worth every penny!
Tedious and shallow. Pretends to be based on the great literary traditions of Vanity Fair, etc. but shallow plot, unlikable people, and the women are especially despicably self-involved. Aren't we tired of this? It's true that the play is just a skeleton of life on stage but you the reader will have to imagine their humanity and worth, not much on the page or even in the subtext if the playwright's clues are any indication. The playwright was clearly fortunate to have great actors interpreting her characters. Great actors can make a phone book sound fascinating, perplexing, clever and deep. This play is not.
Gina Gionfriddo is a playwright to watch. Well written, interesting character study of people struggling to find themselves. I highly recommend it.
Perfect read.
Gionfriddo has created a fascinating story that is unpredictable in the best way. The relationships that she has created hit close to home, and the story itself is heart-wrenching.
